# Instagram's video selfie check: why it's asked, what happens next and where the video goes

Published 18 October 2026 3 min read [By the GetMyInstaBack team](https://getmyinstaback.com/about/)

**In one minute:** Turning your head on camera shows Instagram two things: someone real is there, and that someone matches the face on the account. The account is frozen while staff and systems check. Success can mean a reset link in the private inbox you named; failure means a message there too, and often a second try in the app. The clip is kept securely, never shown publicly, and nobody can record it on your behalf.

## Why a video, not a photo

Still images and documents are easy to edit, Instagram points out, so it relies on short selfie videos instead. Head movement in several directions demonstrates liveness and provides a face to match against the profile's pictures.

## When it comes up

| Situation | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Recovery after losing your email or phone, or after a hack | The most common trigger: [no access to email or phone](https://getmyinstaback.com/guides/instagram-no-access-email-phone/) |
| Accounts that show your face | The selfie can match you; accounts without your photos get other questions or an ID request instead |
| Certain ID requests | Instagram may ask for ID to confirm ownership or age, process payments or prevent abuse such as scams and phishing; most people get at least two attempts |

## While it's being reviewed

- The account stays locked until Instagram has confirmed it's you.
- **Pass:** watch the private inbox you entered; a reset link may land there.
- **Fail:** a notification goes to the same inbox, and a retry may be offered in the app.
- **Decline:** skipping the check can leave you permanently outside the account.

Since the result comes by email, use an address only you can open; shared or throwaway inboxes are a bad idea.

## Where the video goes, and for how long

What Instagram's Help Center says:

- It's kept in secure storage, out of sight of your followers, friends and every other user.
- It confirms your identity, and may also help improve detection of fake selfies, prevent scams, phishing and fraud, and meet legal obligations.
- Review is a mix of people and automated systems, sometimes with trusted service providers checking authenticity.
- Retention depends on the purpose, and Instagram says you're always told before you send it. Examples it gives: selfies for advertiser authorisation or Meta Verified may stay up to 180 days, extended to as long as a year for political, electoral or social-issue advertising and suspected fraud. All official durations: [waiting times](https://getmyinstaback.com/blog/instagram-deadlines-waiting-times/).

## Before you hit record

Our own practical habits, not Instagram rules:

- Use your usual phone and a network the account knows.
- Face the light; keep hats, glasses and masks off.
- Turn slowly and fully with each on-screen cue.
- Stay on a steady connection until the upload finishes.
- Double-check the secure email address for typos.

## Only you can do it

The check exists to prove ownership, so a stand-in defeats its purpose. Strangers who want a clip of your face "for Meta" are running a scam: [recovery scams](https://getmyinstaback.com/guides/instagram-recovery-scams/).

## Common questions

### Why is my account unusable during the review?

Instagram keeps it locked until it has confirmed that you're the owner.

### What if my selfie is rejected?

You'll get an email at the secure address you provided, and the app may let you send a new one.

### Can other people see my video selfie?

No; it sits in secure storage and never appears publicly or to your contacts.

### How long is the video kept?

That varies with the purpose, and Instagram states the period before you record. Advertising and Meta Verified selfies can be held for half a year (180 days), in rare cases a full year.

## Rejected again and again?

Send us the exact on-screen message plus the contact details still on file. A free reply will name the realistic next step. We never ask for passwords, codes or the video.
