# Suspended or disabled Instagram account: a step-by-step appeal plan

**In one minute:** Treat the notice as the start of your case file. Save a screenshot of it, note the deadline it gives and appeal once, through the Instagram app on your usual phone. Any selfie or ID check Instagram requests is yours to complete, nobody else's. Don't open a replacement account while you wait, and don't hand your login to anyone who promises an unban.

## Start with the notice

Everything in your appeal depends on two lines in the notice Instagram shows when you log in: the reason, and the deadline. Before you do anything else, work out which of these three situations you're in.

| Status | What it means | Your next move |
|---|---|---|
| Suspended | The account is offline and hidden from others, but you can still challenge the decision | Appeal before the date in your notice |
| Disabled | An appeal was turned down, or the window to appeal ran out | Options are narrower, though not always gone |
| Restricted | Login works, but certain features are switched off temporarily | Open Account Status to see which ones and why |

Plan around the date printed in your notice, not a number from a forum. Miss it, and a suspension can turn into a permanent disable.

## Match your appeal to the reason

Each reason needs its own argument. A generic "please give my account back" answers none of them.

| Reason in the notice | What your appeal should show |
|---|---|
| Community Guidelines | Which post or behaviour you think was misread, and why it fits the rules |
| Impersonation | Your real identity, and what on the profile proves it |
| Age requirements | That you meet the minimum age; expect an age check |
| Automated behaviour | The automation tools or apps involved, and that they're gone |
| Intellectual property | That you own the content or had permission to use it |

## Put your case file together

Collect these before you press the appeal button. Should the account vanish completely, this folder is your only record.

- **The notice:** one screenshot with reason, date and deadline all visible.
- **A short timeline:** when the notice appeared, when you appealed, and anything Instagram replied.
- **Every email from Instagram:** one of them may hold the single link that still lets you carry on.
- **Your email account, secured:** a new password and two-factor authentication, because most updates arrive there.
- **Background:** what the account is for, its age, and whether a business depends on it.

## Filing the appeal: four rules

1. **Use the option in the notice.** Appeal through the Instagram app itself, on your usual phone, rather than through third-party web forms.
2. **Answer the reason, not the punishment.** One short, factual explanation that addresses what Instagram said beats a long, emotional message.
3. **Tell the same story every time.** If you need to appeal again, stick to your first version. Reviewers notice when accounts of events don't match, and mismatched stories sink a lot of appeals.
4. **Do identity checks yourself.** Selfie videos and ID uploads happen on your own phone. There is no such thing as someone doing them for you.

## Five ways people make it permanent

- **A second account to get around the suspension.** Instagram sees that as dodging its enforcement, and it can count against both accounts.
- **Letting the deadline pass.** After that date, a permanent disable is on the table.

- **Clearing out your inbox.** Instagram's emails hold case details you'll want later.
- **Doing the flagged thing again** from another profile during the review.

## If the answer is no and you live in the EU

When a very large platform such as Instagram limits or shuts down your account, EU law (the Digital Services Act) entitles you to:

1. a **statement of reasons** that explains what was decided and why;
2. a **complaint to Instagram itself**, free of charge;
3. a hearing before an independent, certified **dispute settlement body** (examples: Appeals Centre Europe, User Rights, Platform Control);
4. the **courts**, which stay open to you either way.

For you, these bodies cost little or nothing: when one rules for you, Instagram covers the fee. You can choose a body based in another country, provided it works in your language. Its ruling doesn't bind Instagram legally, yet Instagram must take part in good faith. ## When a second opinion is worth it

Plenty of people get through a suspension alone using this plan. Outside help starts to make sense when:

- the notice doesn't say clearly which rule you're supposed to have broken;
- your first appeal came back rejected;
- the selfie or ID check fails again and again;
- the account carries your business or your income;
- the deadline is close.

## Common questions

### Is there a standard appeal deadline for a suspended Instagram account?

Use the date printed in your notice. Numbers quoted online vary, and after that date passes a permanent disable becomes possible.

### Can I still appeal once my account is disabled?

Fewer doors stay open after a disable, but not always none. EU residents can still complain to Instagram and go to a certified dispute settlement body.

### Does making a second account hurt my appeal?

It can. A profile opened to sidestep a suspension looks like dodging enforcement to Instagram, and both the appeal and the new profile can suffer.

### Who decides an out-of-court dispute about my Instagram account?

An independent body certified under EU rules, for example Appeals Centre Europe, User Rights or Platform Control. Instagram isn't legally bound by the ruling but must take part in good faith.
