# No access to your Instagram email or phone? How to prove the account is yours

**In one minute:** Work from the outside in. First try to win back the email account or phone number, because Instagram can't do that part for you. Next, use login help with your username and send a login link to anything you still control. If nothing reaches you, request support from a phone: Instagram asks for a secure email address and then either a video selfie or details from when you signed up.

## Why this case is harder than most

Instagram decides who owns an account largely through the email address and phone number attached to it. Lose both, say an old work address and a number you gave up years ago, and the standard one-time-code route has nowhere to go. Instagram is also explicit that it **cannot get you back into your email account**; that's your email provider's job.

That doesn't make the account unrecoverable. The remaining routes are slower, and they reward patience and a consistent story.

## Route 1: win back the email or number

Get the inbox back and everything else usually moves quickly.

## Route 2: the help options on the login screen

1. From the login screen, choose the forgotten-password or get-help option.
2. Enter your **username** rather than an email or phone number. Instagram may reveal contact options you'd forgotten were linked.
3. Have a **login link** sent wherever you still have access, even an old address or number.
4. If the account is linked to Facebook in Accounts Center, try signing in or recovering through Facebook.

## Route 3: request support and verify

When no login link reaches you, Instagram may offer a **support request**, which has to be started on a mobile device. It asks where to reply: give an email address nobody else can read, never a shared or throwaway inbox. What happens next depends on the account:

| Shows photos of you | A short selfie video, turning your head as instructed |
| Has no photos of you | Your original sign-up email or number, plus the type of device you registered on |
| Some cases | A government ID; Instagram warns you may temporarily lose access while it reviews it |

About the selfie, Instagram says it's kept securely and isn't shown on your profile or to anybody else; retention depends on the purpose, and you're informed before sending. If one isn't accepted, you can record another.

## Habits that slow a case down

- **Request after request.** A pile of contradictory requests tends to slow everything down. Send one, then wait.
- **A new device or a VPN.** Recovery tends to go best from a phone and a network the account already knows.
- **Someone else's inbox.** Instagram's replies go to the secure email address you give.

## Back in? Make sure it can't happen again

1. Put an email address and phone number on the account that you'll still have in five years.

3. Sign out of devices you don't recognise.
4. Check Accounts Center so your accounts are linked the way you intend.

## Common questions

### Will Instagram recover my email account for me?

No. Instagram says it can't help you access your email account. Use your email provider's own recovery process.

### How do I verify an account that has no photos of me?

A selfie video has nothing to compare your face with, so Instagram can fall back on other details: the address or number used at registration and the type of device you signed up on.

### Is my video selfie shown to anyone?

According to Instagram it's kept securely and isn't visible on your profile or to anyone else. Retention depends on the purpose, and you're told before you send it.

### Should I send lots of support requests to speed things up?

No. Contradictory repeat requests tend to make things slower. Send one consistent request and watch the reply address you gave.
