# Instagram recovery scams: how to tell a fake "recovery expert" from real help

**In one minute:** Three things give a recovery scam away: it wants your password or login codes, it promises a guaranteed result, or it claims a back door into Meta. Add a stranger who messaged you first and wants crypto or gift cards up front, and you can be certain. Real help works through Instagram's own routes and never needs your login.

## The scammer's playbook

Someone who has just lost an account is stressed, in a hurry and asking strangers for help in public. That's exactly where these scammers wait, and the script barely changes:

1. **The bait.** You post "my account got hacked", and within minutes replies appear: "@someone recovered mine in an hour, 100% real."
2. **The costume.** Handles such as "meta.support.team", a verification badge drawn onto the avatar, a gallery of supposedly rescued profiles.
3. **The ask.** Your password, the six-digit code that just arrived, backup codes, or a selfie video they'll "pass to Meta".
4. **The exit.** The account is gone for good, or the fee is, and now and then they return for a second payment.

## Red flags, from most to least obvious

| Claims insider access | "I work with Meta's support team" | Nobody honest has a back door into Meta |
| Guarantees the result | "Guaranteed, done tonight" | Only Instagram decides outcomes |
| Demands crypto, gift cards or wire transfers first | "Pay first, then I start" | Those payments can't be clawed back, which is the point |
| Contacted you first | A DM or comment reply out of nowhere | Real services don't hunt for clients in comment sections |
| Can't say who they are | No business name, a days-old profile, reviews that read alike | There's nobody to hold responsible |

## Five questions to ask any recovery service

A legitimate service answers these without hesitating:

1. What's your name or company, and how long have you done this?
2. At any point, will you need my password or a login code? *Correct answer: never.*
3. Which Instagram process would you use in my case?
4. What do I pay, when, and what happens if nothing changes?
5. Will you guarantee success? *An honest service says it can't.*

## Already paid, or handed over your login?

1. **Call your bank or payment provider now** and ask about a chargeback or stopping further payments.
2. **Change your Instagram password** if you still can, and add two-step verification through an authenticator app.
3. **Do the same for your email:** fresh password, two-step verification.

5. **Report it:** the scammer's account to Instagram, and the fraud to the police or your national fraud reporting service.

> Watch for "recovery of the recovery". After one scam, "fund recovery agents" often appear offering to win your money back. It's the same scam, round two.

## What legitimate help looks like

A legitimate service works only through Instagram's own appeal, recovery, report and verification processes. It tells you honestly whether your case is realistic, agrees the price and terms before any work starts, leaves identity checks to you on your own device and refuses to go near anyone else's account. ### Can I pay someone at Meta to unlock my Instagram?

No. There's no honest back door into Meta; every case runs through Instagram's own processes.

### Why do recovery scammers ask for my login code?

With the code, your password or a backup code, they can take the account permanently. Real help never requires any of them.

### I sent money to a recovery scammer. What now?

Ring your bank or payment app immediately to dispute the charge and stop further payments. Then lock down Instagram and your email, and report the scammer to Instagram and the police.

### Someone says they can recover the money I lost to a scam. Are they real?

Treat it as round two. Victims of one scam are routinely approached with "fund recovery" offers.
