# Content about you on Instagram: which report actually gets it removed

## Pick the right route first

## Evidence comes before the report

- Links: every post, highlight and profile concerned.
- Captures with the username and date visible, since posts vanish and reappear.
- Proof that the content concerns you or belongs to you.

Resist arguing with the poster in the comments. It rarely changes anything and tends to push the content in front of more people.

## Privacy: personal details and images of you

- Where it's safe to do so, Instagram asks you to contact the person who posted it first and ask them to remove it.
- Privacy reports are generally accepted only from the affected person, a child's parent, or whoever is legally responsible for them.
- Details that are already public somewhere else may not be taken down from Instagram.

## Intimate images

1. Keep a screenshot for yourself, then report the post in the app.
2. According to Instagram, matching technology helps it stop the same picture being posted again.
3. Use **StopNCII.org**. It creates a digital fingerprint of the image (a hash) on your own device, which participating platforms use to block it, without the image ever leaving your phone.

## Copyright and trademarks

Your own photos, videos, music or writing go through Meta's intellectual property reporting form. Filing is limited to the rights holder or an agent they've authorised, and every affected link can go into the same report. A brand name or logo goes through the separate trademark report form instead. ## Harassment and bullying

Each abusive post, comment or DM has a report option in its menu, and the sender isn't told who used it. Meanwhile, block or restrict the account, narrow who can comment and switch on hidden words so abusive DMs get filtered.

## In the EU: illegal content

Under the Digital Services Act, reporting **illegal content** has to be simple, and Instagram must handle your notice and explain both its decision and how to challenge it. Think a post breaks your national law? Write that in the report and cite the law.

## Common questions

### Can I get a post removed just because it's unflattering?

Not on that basis alone. Instagram removes content that breaks its rules or the law, for example privacy, copyright, harassment or impersonation.

### Can I file a privacy report for my friend?

Generally not. Instagram takes privacy reports from the affected person, a child's parent or a legal guardian, so your friend should file it.

### Does StopNCII.org need me to upload the image?

No. The fingerprint (a hash) is calculated on your own phone or computer, and partner platforms use only that hash to spot and block the picture.

### Who can file a copyright report on Instagram?

Only the rights holder, or an agent acting with their authority, through Meta's intellectual property reporting form.
