Instagram links "Try again later" to activity on your account that doesn't look like a real person using the app: automation, an outside app holding your login (like and follower sellers especially), or someone else with your password. Disconnect apps you don't trust, review your sessions, set a new password, add two-factor, and glance at Account Status in case the limit stems from your content instead. Whatever you do, don't give your login to anyone promising to lift the block.
What Instagram is telling you
The message is terse, but Instagram's Help Center ties it to one thing: when inauthentic activity is detected, you may see "Try again later" while using the app. It also describes a close cousin, where an account is restricted and flagged for review because its behaviour resembles data scraping, the automated collection of information.
Either way, something on your account behaves unlike a human using Instagram normally, and it makes no difference whether that was you, an app or an intruder with your password.
The triggers Instagram names
| Trigger | What it looks like |
|---|---|
| Automation | Instagram accessed, or information collected, by software without permission |
| Apps holding your login | You typed your username and password into an app or site, often a like or follower seller; Instagram warns these can take complete control |
| Unauthorised services | Tools that interact with Instagram in ways it doesn't allow |
| A leaked password | Comments or shares you didn't make; reuse on a breached website is a common source |
Clearing it, in order
- Disconnect apps you don't trust. Settings › Your app and media › Website permissions › Apps and Websites › Active; tap Remove on anything unfamiliar or unused. A removed app keeps only public access, though it may hold on to what it already collected.
- Review your sessions. Where you're logged in, under Password and security, lists devices; sign out the strangers (how).
- Set a new password. Every device, suspicious ones included, gets signed out. Minimum six characters mixing numbers, letters and symbols; Instagram suggests eight or more, unique to Instagram.
- Add two-factor, ideally with an authenticator app as Instagram recommends.
- Check contact details and links: your own email and phone only, and nothing unknown in Accounts Center.
Locked out entirely? None of that is reachable yet; start with the hacked-account steps.
Rule out a content restriction
Not every limit is about suspicious activity. Account Status (Settings, under More info and support) lists removed content, features you've lost and a way to request a review if you disagree. If something shows up there, that's the route. Falling reach rather than blocked actions? See reach dropped.
Or is it just the app?
Some errors aren't restrictions at all. Instagram's first suggestion for anything misbehaving is to update, since some older versions are no longer supported; you can also test instagram.com in a browser, or Instagram Lite on Android. Features that still fail should be reported from the app.
What makes it worse
- Like and follower services that want your login. Instagram calls them likely attempts to misuse your account.
- Paid "unblockers" asking for your password or codes. Handing your login to outsiders is precisely what causes these blocks, and it risks the entire account: recovery scams.
- A recycled password. One breach elsewhere can expose Instagram too.
Common questions
Why does Instagram keep telling me to try again later?
Because it has detected what it considers inauthentic activity: automation, outside apps with your login, or another person using your password.
How do I get rid of it?
Disconnect untrusted apps, sign out unknown sessions, change the password and add two-factor. Then check Account Status and update the app.
Is "Try again later" a ban?
No. It's a limit tied to suspected inauthentic activity. Content-based restrictions appear in Account Status, and disabled accounts get their own notice and appeal.
Can a like-selling app cause an action block?
Yes. Instagram lists handing your username and password to such a service among the things that trip its suspicious-behaviour systems.
