Instagram reach dropped: reading Account Status and recommendation limits

In one minute

Before you change anything, check the Account Status screen. It lists what Instagram removed and whether your posts, and your profile, are eligible to be shown to non-followers. Something flagged? Delete it, or request a review if Instagram got it wrong. Nothing flagged? Then the drop probably isn't a penalty at all, and the answer is in what your audience is engaging with.

What people call a "shadowban"

"Shadowban" isn't Instagram's word. What Instagram actually has are recommendation limits: your followers keep seeing your posts, but Instagram may stop putting them in front of non-followers in Explore, Reels and Feed suggestions. It can also tell you whether your account is eligible to be suggested in Search and Suggested Accounts.

Instagram holds suggested content to a tougher standard (its Recommendations Guidelines) than content in general (its Community Guidelines). A post can therefore stay up and still never be suggested.

Where to find Account Status

Account Status lives in Settings. Some app versions group it with settings and activity, others with help and support, and the menus get reshuffled now and then; typing "Account Status" into the settings search finds it either way.

How to read it

Recommendation eligibilityWhether non-followers can be shown your postsFix or appeal whatever is flagged
Account recommendationsWhether your account can show up in Search or Suggested AccountsFix or appeal whatever is flagged

Requesting a review

  1. In Account Status, open the item listed under removed content.
  2. Tap Request a review.
  3. Come back later: the outcome shows up in Account Status and in the Support Inbox.
  4. While the review is open, hold back on posting anything similar.

If you agree the post broke the rules, deleting or editing it is the faster fix.

When nothing is flagged

A clean Account Status usually means there's no penalty to lift. Feed, Stories, Explore and Reels each have their own ranking, built on signals such as what people engage with and their history of interacting with you. Posting less often, switching formats or a shift in who follows you can all move reach a lot. Action blocks are a separate problem with their own fixes: Try again later.

What won't bring reach back

  • Purchased followers and engagement. Fake activity tends to deepen the problem.
  • Bots and "growth" apps acting on your behalf.
  • "Shadowban removal" services that want your login. Recommendation status is Instagram's alone to change.

Common questions

Can I see whether Instagram is limiting my reach?

Yes. Account Status says whether posts and profile are eligible to be shown to non-followers, and lists anything Instagram removed.

Why is my post allowed but not recommended?

Suggested content must meet the Recommendations Guidelines, a tougher bar than the Community Guidelines everything has to meet. Clearing the second but not the first leaves a post visible yet unsuggested.

Where do I see the result of a review I requested?

Both Account Status and the app's Support Inbox show it.

Will buying followers bring my reach back?

No. Inauthentic activity can make recommendation problems worse, not better.

Can't make sense of Account Status?
