Removed content can usually be sent back for a second look from three places: the violation notice, Account Status and your Support Inbox. Instagram allows itself up to 90 days to reply and may close some requests unreviewed. After two Instagram reviews you still dispute, the Oversight Board may be open to you for 15 days, with the Board choosing its own cases.
What a review is
Instagram takes down posts, comments and stories it judges to break its Community Guidelines, and admits it doesn't always get it right. That's why most removals can be sent back for another look. A few content types can't be reviewed yet, though Instagram says it's adding options.
Reviews combine technology and people. Instagram notes that some appeals are prioritised for human review, which caps how many requests it can handle.
Where to ask
| Starting point | Path |
|---|---|
| The violation notification | The Ask for a review button at its foot |
| Account Status | Profile › menu › Help › Account Status › Removed content › the item › Request a review, then your reason |
| Support Inbox | The Violations tab under Support Requests › See options › Request review |
Account Status also shows which features are currently off for you and whether removed content is putting the whole account at risk. Instagram warns that repeated removals can cost you the account, usually after a warning.
How long it takes
Instagram gives itself as long as 90 days and sometimes closes requests unreviewed. Progress is visible anytime in Account Status or next to the violation in the Support Inbox. A push notification announces the decision, and content is reinstated if Instagram finds it was wrong. All official timeframes: waiting times.
Making the request count
- Screenshot the notice first, with date and stated reason.
- When asked why, pick the reason that genuinely fits your case.
- Send one request and note the date; Instagram never says duplicates help.
- Leave the content offline until the outcome is in.
The Oversight Board: the next step up
The Oversight Board is independent of Meta and reviews a selection of its content decisions. Two decision types can go there, per Instagram: one concerning your own post, or one leaving up something you reported.
| Condition | Detail |
|---|---|
| Review first | Two completed Instagram reviews, and you still disagree |
| Eligibility | Not every piece of content or decision qualifies |
| Deadline | 15 days from the decision; the window then closes |
| Selection | Only some eligible cases are taken; your reference number tracks it on the Board's site |
The Board handles content decisions; for a suspended account, the notice's own appeal comes first: appeal plan.
In the EU: more options
In the EU, the law adds further routes on top of Instagram's review, such as independent certified dispute bodies: your DSA rights.
Common questions
Where do I ask Instagram to review a removed post?
Three doors: the notification itself, the removed-content list in Account Status, or the Violations tab of the Support Inbox.
How long until I get an answer?
Up to 90 days, per Instagram, and some requests close without a review. Account Status and the Support Inbox show the progress.
Can the Oversight Board overturn Instagram's decision?
Possibly, if three things line up: two Instagram reviews already done, an eligible decision, and the Board choosing your case.
What's the Oversight Board deadline?
Fifteen days, counted from the decision.
